There are four membranophones in the Collection of musical instruments: the drum from Ivankovo (Slavonia) Et 1210, the drum from Sveti Antun near Medveja (Istria) Et 2765, the tambourine from the area around Štip (Macedonia) Et 3626 and the tupan from Tetovo (Macedonia) Et 10912.
The drum from Ivankovo is made out of a single piece of wood inside which lambskin is stretched to serve as a membrane, and it is played with the use of two sticks for hitting the membrane. This instrument was used as an accompaniment for double flutes or two-stringed tambouras (the tambura dvožica) on the occasion of various festivities or wedding parties and it was donated to the Museum in 1921.
The drum from Sveti Antun in Istria is made out of a rim of an old sieve with shorn sheepskin stretched across it. It had a dual function in its primary context; for some time it had been used as a drum at various festivities, celebrations and wedding parties, and later it was used as a container when picking mushrooms.
